Personal Essay What do you think? If you can express yourself well enough, people will pay attention. The personal essay is a (usually) brief expression of viewpoint based on personal experience and observation. These essays grace most magazines and many newspapers, ranging from the sophistication of Joan Didion to the "regular-guy" take of Dave Barry. Personal essays are similar to memoir, but the emphasis is more on viewpoint than story, and they are much more personal in nature than those essays you wrote in school. In this course you'll learn how to gather ideas and utilize structure, voice, and style to create compelling personal essays. You will also learn how and where to market your work.
